Artist's Description

'Meridian Sparks'

This morning I ran some errands after working overnight... as I headed back out to my car in the early twilight I noticed some flashes off to the distant southwest, storms? They certainly weren't in the forecast but a review of radar showed some weak showers meandering towards the area. I headed off to Riverside Park in Yankton hoping that at least the clouds would make for a nice sunrise. Rain chased me back to the trees several times without much in the way of lightning, then this little storm cell took off and produced a handful of nice cloud to ground strikes! I've had this shot with lightning and the historic Meridian Bridge on my mind for a few years, but conditions have just never come together. I had to stop myself from celebrating and making the dock move after this bolt flashed right after I clicked the shutter! I finally got my shot!

An early trip to Yellowstone National Park on a family vacation around the age of 12 would stoke the early fires of my passion for photography, which saw me using a 35mm film camera to shoot various geo-thermal features, wildlife, and landscapes in the park. I'm not sure my mother was excited about paying to develop the 10 rolls of film I burned...
